Aim with equations
Choose the equation that carries the shot from the cannon coordinate to the target coordinate.
Sharp shots.
Clean equations.
Every level is built from readable equations and coordinates that can be reasoned through by hand.

Coordinates
A point like (-4, 2) means move left or right first, then up or down. The cannon coordinate is the barrel tip, not the tank body.
Check the launch
Put the cannon x into the equation. If the y answer is not the cannon y, the shell cannot launch and it blows at the barrel.
Check the target
After the launch works, test the target coordinate. If x = 4 gives the target's y, that equation can hit.
Slope and intercept
For y = 2x - 3, the slope is 2 and the intercept is -3. Small changes can miss by a lot.
Curves
Parabolas, V-shapes, and cubics can curve around obstacles. They still must pass through the cannon and the target.
